Set Sail on Museum Night V&A
The V&A Waterfront precinct will come alive on 28th June 2018 for Museum Night. The popular initiative encompasses a diverse selection of activities, from music, history and art to delicious cuisine. Set sail to the Iziko Maritime Centre at the Union-Castle House, Dock Road and gain free entry from 5-10pm.
Since before the time of Xhore and Autshamato - two KhoiSan chiefs - and during their reign, ships of old have thrown anchors and set foot ashore along our bountiful coast. The treacherous Cape of Storms with its tempestuous temperament has thwarted the objectives of many a ship. Clifton’s 4th beach has been confirmed as the watery tomb of the slave wreck, Sao Jose. The Portuguese slave ship went to ground, more than two-hundred years ago, when nearly half of her enslaved cargo fell victim to the waves.
Travel back in time with maritime expert, Curator, Thys van der Merwe. Set sail on an epic exploration - from the southern belt of Orion to the Southern Cross. Navigate through the tales of history: the shipwrecks that litter the coastline; the completion of Table Bay Harbour, by prisoners and warders of the Breakwater Prison; the story of the Mendi and the history of the mail-ship era.
Experience museums in a new light – After dark. Visit the Iziko Maritime Centre from 5-10pm on 28 June for Museum Night V&A.
