“Opening Plato’s Cave: Opening art”

  • Posted: Jan 16, 2014

The Friends of the South African National Gallery will host a 2-day workshop (with optional 1 day attendance) on the work and influence of SA artist and educator Kevin Atkinson on the 2nd and 9th of February from 10h00 to 13h00.

The workshop is open to all. The curious will find it a useful overview of the major art movements of the 20th century and those more familiar with art history will appreciate how this SA artist referenced the global movements by the exhibition curators and art lecturers, some of whom were friends of the artist.

Some highlights include a tour of the artist’s studio with viewings of some of the non-exhibited work, a panel discussion “artist as shaman?” with psychologist and close friend of Atkinson’s and some of his post-war paintings (abstract expressionism, hard edge).

The cost of the workshop is R 240 for members, R 290 for non-members and R 200 for students for both mornings. This includes lunch and tea. For one morning only the cost is R 140 for members, R 190 for non-members and R 100 for students. To book download the online form here and return it to Lizzie O’Hanlon via email at sangfriends@iziko.org.za or post to The Friends of the SA National Gallery, Box 2420, Cape Town, 8000, South Africa. For enquiries phone Lizzie on 021 481 3951.
