Holiday fun at Iziko Museums!

Explore, discover and experience the wonders of our world this holiday at Iziko Museums.  Get out of the cold and join us for some holiday fun. Our museums each have their own history and character, showcasing extensive art, social and natural history collections, reflective of our diverse African heritage.

For an edu-taining family outing, visit the African Dinosaurs, Shark World and Virtual Earth (an interactive digital theatre running animations of climate change) exhibitions.  Touch, feel and explore interesting things in the Discovery Room at the Iziko South African Museum.

There are Planetarium shows for the young and the bold. Join Davy Dragon, his grandfather and Dragon as they travel through the Milky Way. Davy and the Dragon, on show at the Iziko Planetarium. Monday to Friday at 11:00; 12:00 and 15:00, and Saturday and Sunday at 12:00 and 15:30.

Discover the astronomical calculations that informed the famous Mayan prediction, and experience the fascinating and accurate observations of those heavenly bodies that form part of the universe around us in 2012 – the end or the beginning? On show Monday to Friday at 14:00, Tuesday evening at 20:00 (& sky talk), and Saturday and Sunday at 14:30.

Star Wheel Workshop on 4 & 11 July from 09:00-10:30. Bring your torch, make your own star wheel and learn how to identify stars and constellations. Age: 8-12 years. Cost: R20 per workshop

Batik Textile Workshop, 4 July at the Iziko Bo-Kaap Museum, Wale Street.
The Indian/Malay word “batik” means “to dot”. Hot wax is applied to textile surfaces with a tool called a canting, a small copper container with one to seven spouts.

Iziko is a public entity and non-profit organisation which brings together 11 national museums, the Planetarium and Social History Centre, under a single governance and leadership structure.  The organisation allows free access to all individuals on commemorative days, as well as unlimited free access to individuals aged 18 and under (excludes Castle of Good Hope and Planetarium).
