Unshackled History: The Wreck of the Slave Ship, São José, 1794

This exhibition brings into memory the wreck of the Portuguese slave ship, São José that foundered off Cape Town in 1794. It aims to tell the story of the wreck, the enslaved Africans on board, and its place in the world. Traditional artefact displays and exhibition panels tell the stories, but it also creates an interactive environment for visitors.  This unique contribution to the study of the impact and legacies of the global slave trade has the potential to reshape our understanding of the past – and our inter-connectedness as the human race.
