The Iziko South African National Gallery collection is highly diverse, reflecting a history of collecting over the past 140-odd years which in turn reveals the time-bound nature of ‘taste’, collecting priorities and cultural politics in its ongoing formation.  Objects in the Tide of Time is a new installation that reflects a philosophical curatorial approach in the way it has been assembled and poses questions about the nature of art museums and their mission.  Works long banished to deep storage have resurfaced on the gallery’s walls, while old favourites have returned after conservation treatment and some new acquisitions are being shown for the very first time.  Hayden Proud will give insights into the exhibition, spread over five rooms, affording us a fresh and deeper view of our collection that enables us to understand and appreciate it all the more.
