The Iziko Art Collections Department holds in trust a collection of historical, modern and contemporary works of art that is both South African and international in origin. This diverse collection consists of paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, sculptures, conceptual art, new-media works and the material culture of Southern Africa. Dialogues : Conversations between ‘old’ and ‘new’ profiles a small selection from these collections, showcasing a variety of works from different periods that demonstrate a commonality in terms of either formal concerns or in theme and content. The pairings, juxtapositions and groupings in this exhibition attempt to reveal ‘dialogues’ between old and new; past and present. An ‘installation’ featured on the exhibition which features a major group portrait from the Sir Abe Bailey Collection even shows how contemporary artists use historical works of art as a basis for biting comment on current notions of patriarchy and our definitions of human sexuality. Some of the older paintings on view have been newly conserved and are now being seen again for the first time in some years. Juxtaposed with contemporary photographs, abstract paintings or thematically similar works, they reveal underlying consistencies in diverse artistic expression across time and space, between South Africa and the world at large.
