WALKABOUT BY 2013 STANDARD BANK YOUNG ARTIST AWARD WINNER MARY SIBANDE
An event by the Friends of the National Gallery
Mary Sibande is celebrated for her sculptural practice in which she employs the human female form as a vehicle through painting and sculpture to explore the construction of identity in a post-colonial South African context. She attempts to critique stereotypical depictions of (particularly black) women in our society. Through her work, Sibande highlights the rituals of imitation and reproduction that black women sometimes perform in order to conform to Western ideals of beauty and femininity.
