VISIT THE DE JONGH FAMILY HOME

13 Aberdeen Road, Newlands

An event by the Friends of the National Gallery

Martinus Johannes “Tinus” de Jongh (1885-1942) was one of South Africa’s most popular artists.  Self-taught, he began his career as a decorator in the Netherlands before emigrating to South Africa, where he pursued painting full time.  Tinus was the father of Gabriel de Jongh (1913-2004), who in his turn became a famous painter of landscapes in South Africa.  Visit the Tudor style house where grandson Tinus will show a DVD on the life of his grandfather, which will include his first and last pictures and some of his Dutch work.  Afterwards there will be a visit to the gallery where his father Gabriel painted, and some of his more unusual works will be shown.
