Tour of the Cape Town Diamond Museum

Situated in the bustling heart of the world-famous Clock Tower precinct in the Waterfront, the Cape Town Diamond Museum pays tribute to the world’s most precious gemstone. The Friends have arranged a visit that will tell the three-billion year old story from the formation of a diamond to the final polished stone.

We will learn more about South African diamonds and explore the history of the diamond rush. The discovery of diamonds in 1867 had a profound impact on the diamond world: within a decade 95 per cent of all diamonds were coming from South Africa. We will learn how rough diamonds are transformed into creations of fire and light and explore the romance and realities of this fascinating era as we trace the stunning rise and famous rivalries of the local diamond industry.

Life sized replicas of some of the world’s most famous, well-known and breath-taking diamonds are on display: the Cullinan, the diamond with the best gem quality and biggest diamond found in the world, the Hope and the Taylor Burton. The museum affords an opportunity to appreciate their beauty and understand their fame.
