Frederike Stokhuyzen was born to Dutch parents in Johannesburg and earned a degree in fine art at Rhodes University and thereafter a teaching diploma.  She travelled to London, spending a year at the Central School of Arts and Crafts where she specialised in the design of stained glass windows before she returned to Cape Town.  She has exhibited extensively, solo as well as participating in group shows which include the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, the Royal Institute of British Artists, the winter salon of the Royal Institute, the Society of Graphic Artists (London) and the Paris Salon.  South African flowerscapes, landscapes, mountains, rockscapes, treescapes, vineyards as well as wildlife are the subjects of Frederike's work.   Watercolours or pen and wash are executed on the spot in the course of her travels, while her oils are painted exclusively with a palette knife in her studio, a technique lending the work a dramatic quality.
