Patterns of Contact: Designs from the Indian Ocean World
Liberman Room at Iziko South African National Gallery
18 August – November 2014
Deeply entrenched contributions to our history, visual culture, art and design will be revealed in a breathtaking exhibition of treasures from the Indian Ocean World. A rare selection of works reflecting design styles and local influences in a range of materials including precious metals, textiles, glass, ceramics, and wood, will be drawn from the Iziko Permanent Collections. These will be supplemented with rare examples such as a unique 10th century Chinese map of Africa, on loan from Parliament, as well as magnificent works from the Groote Schuur Collection.
An exciting series of lectures by local specialists and historians focussing on aspects of Indian Ocean historical studies, culture and art will enrich the exhibition.
Patterns of Contact is a Cape Town World Design Capital 2014 project - #WDC255.
