Coetzee has directed major institutions in the United Stated and Europe, curated hundreds of exhibitions on all five continents, published over 30 monographs and taught at numerous important academic institutions. He is a visiting professor at New World School of the Arts in Miami, USA, curates one of the most comprehensive collections of contemporary art from Africa and Diaspora, is the cultural specialist for the Zeitz Foundation, and sits on the International Advisory Committee of the Laumeier Sculpture Park in St. Louis, USA. He is a recognised artist in his own right and a generous benefactor of Iziko Museums and especially SANG.
